KIAMBU, Kenya, Apr 19 – Evans Karani, the main suspect in the murder case of Catherine Nyokabi has been remanded for 14 days in police custody, in a bid to allow detectives conclude investigations.
Detectives told a Thika court that they needed time to finalize their probe into case.
The 38 year-old man is accused of killing his girlfriend on Wednesday ,April 14 in Witeithie, within Juja, Kiambu county.
It is not yet clear what transpired and whether he committed the act alone.
The murder suspect is being detained at the Juja Police station.
Appearing virtually under a miscellaneous application before senior resident magistrate Oscar Wanyaga, the court ordered that the accused be re-arraigned on May 3.
This was after the investigating officer Jairus Bondo revealed that a postmortem examination was yet to be conducted on the deceased on Monday.
During his submission, the investigating officer also told the court that the suspect was scheduled to undergo a mental assessment test.
Further, the investigating officer is also set to interrogate crucial witnesses before compiling a police file subject to be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for perusal and advise.
“Releasing the respondent at the current stage may interfere with our investigations alongside interfering with witnesses,” the investigating officer submitted.
Drama shortly after broke out after the suspect pleaded with the magistrate to make his immediate ruling even before he is formally charged.
Magistrate Oscar Wanyaga: “Any objection to that request by the officer?”
Evans Karani: “Yes I am asking whether you can give me the ruling so that I can start my kifungo mapema (So that i can start my sentence early) ”
Maisgtrate Oscar Wanyaga: “I am yet to give the ruling, do you understand me?”
Evans Karani: “Yes I understand, i can wait for that ruling”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who had upon his arrest by police admitted to committing the heinous murder, left his car abandoned along Bob Harris road in Juja where he had intended to dispose of the body before it got stuck in the mud.
The suspect fled the scene and was later arrested at his rental house in Githurai Kimbo area last week on Friday.
According to police, Nyokabi’s body had been burnt using a corrosive chemical.
“It appeared she was tortured before she was killed,” a detective privy to the initial findings of the ongoing investigations told Shahidi News.

Karani is said to have admitted to killing the lady, following a bitter dispute, that lasted for two weeks.
Caroline’s family is now seeking justice for their loved one.
“Karani had visited our home numerous times and we did not know he was married to another woman and even had children,” the deceased father Gitonga Njogu said.
