NAIROBI,Kenya, May 21 – Moses Amwayi has accused police officers at the Kileleshwa police station of torture while he was in custody.
Amwayi, a 19 year old bodaboda rider was arrested on Monday and accused of trafficking bhang.
He was presented at the Kibera Law courts on Thursday, where denied the charges.
The accused also faulted police for holding him in custody since Monday and failing to take him to court to be charged.
In response to the torture allegations, Chief Magistrate Joyce Gandani summoned Kileleshwa OCS to respond to the claims as she sought reasons why he was detained for three days.
The accused lawyer, Julie Soweto claimed that Amwayi was taken to court on Wednesday but remained inside a police car as other suspects were being charged.
Several police officers accompanying him to court have also been accused of meting violence on him.
The accused is facing charges of trafficking 36 rolls of bhang worth Sh720 in Kawangware.
According to the charge sheet, on Monday May 17 at a bodaboda stage in Kawangware, he was found in possession of the bhang concealed in a brown khaki envelope contrary to narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances Act of 1994.
The accused lawyer urged the court to allow his client to be taken to the hospital after he complained of pain on his body as a result of the alleged torture.
He was freed on a Sh50,000 bond and an alternative cash bail of Sh5000.
The case will be mentioned on June 14 when police will respond to torture claims.
