NAROK, Kenya, May 25 – Police on Tuesday teargassed Maasai Mara University Students who were protesting the death of their colleague who was involved in a road accident.
The students had staged the protest along Narok-Bomet road, where the incident occurred.
At the end, three students were arrested and are currently being held at the Narok Police Station.
The students who wanted to barricade the busy road were protesting what they termed as reckless driving by boda boda riders, following the accident on Monday.
A first year student died instantly during the accident that involved a motorcycle and a lorry. Another student is receiving treatment in hospital.
Among those arrested are the Student organization President Humphrey Omollo and Secretary General Denis Wanjala Matongolo.
They were arrested during a press briefing at institution’s main entrance.
“We planned for a peaceful demonstration to protest the careless riders who are causing deaths and injuries of many of our colleagues through reckless riding for them to change their habits,” Omollo told Shahidi News, shortly before he was arrested.
While the students say the motorcycle rider lost control, police say the female student jumped from the speeding bike in contrasting reports.
