NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 8- An autopsy report of the deceased Karen Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Anne Wanjiru shows her death was caused by a heart attack, triggered by a blood clot on her leg.
The autopsy which was conducted on Thursday indicated she succumbed to deep vein thrombosis.
The postmortem examination was conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Odour at the Kenyatta University Funeral Home.
“She had a blood clot in her left leg,” he told Shahidi News. “This affected her heart functioning.”
A blood clot, or thrombus, can move through the blood stream until it gets stuck in a narrow passageway, becoming what is called an embolus.
The blood can no longer pass through the veins and reach organs. An embolus in a coronary artery can cause a heart attack, in a cerebral artery, it can cause a stroke.
“She had deep vein thrombosis, which led to pulmonary embolism, a clot in the pulmonary artery,” Dr. Oduor said.
The late Waiganjo will be laid to rest at her home on Friday, in Karatina, Nyeri County.
Severe complications of deep vein thrombosis occur when a clot breaks loose (or embolizes) and travels through the bloodstream, causing blockage of blood vessels (pulmonary arteries) in the lung.
Called pulmonary embolism (PE), this can lead to severe difficulty in breathing and even death, depending on the degree of blockage.
Signs and symptoms of a blood clot in the leg or deep vein thrombosis occur in the affected leg when a clot obstructs blood flow and causes inflammation.
Signs and symptoms of DVT may include swelling, gradual onset of pain, Leg cramps, especially at night, Bluish or whitish discoloration of skin among others.
