NAIROBI,Kenya, July 12 – Four suspects arrested last week on Friday are facing murder charges after an unknown male of Nigerian origin was found dead outside an apartment complex in Kilimani area of Nairobi where he was attending a house party.
The four, Umar Kabir Kamara, Vera Osebe Omare,Diana Moraa and Annestine Mamuji Helmut were apprehended by detectives from the Kilimani police after one of the security guards at the apartment reported the incident.
Other guests attending the house party however shortly after the matter was reported fled the scene.
Appearing before magistrate Jane Kamau, the prosecution sought custodial orders to detain the suspects for 14 days in oder to complete investigations.
In their submission, they argued that they needed time to track down some of the revelers that will serve as witnesses in the case and who will also provide crucial details as to what happened leading to the deceased’s fatal death.
“Four motor vehicles were left at the scene as some of the revelers fled. We need to identify the owners through the National Transport and Safety Authority. The vehicles have since been towed to the Kilimani police station and are yet to be claimed ” said the prosecution
The court was further told that police are yet to authenticate the identify of one of the respondents, Umar Kabir Kamara, after he failed to provide identification documents. He however denied claims that he was in the country illegally.
Already, the Nigerian High Commission has been contacted to authenticate his identity.
Also, the body of the deceased is being preserved at the city mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination with a further correspondence from the Nigerian High Commission also being awaited to authenticate his identity as well as notify his next of kin.
The four suspects, were arrested on Friday July 9. They are said to have organized and and were among several revelers at Kings Distinction apartment where the deceased was last seen alive.
An identification parade as well as the registration of the suspect’s fingerprints is also yet to be conducted.
“We intend to take these details to the criminal records office at the DCI to in order to get previous criminal records of the respondents and any other related data, to access and secure any closed circuit television cameras within Kings distinction apartments, ”
The respondents are also expected to be taken to the Mathare Mental National Hospital for a mental assessment.
“If they are released, there is a likelihood they can interfere with investigations and are a flight risk and one of the respondent’s (Umar Kabir Kamara) identity is yet to be confirmed. The others’ abode is also yet to be established.”
The first respondent’s (Umar Kabir Kamara) counsel however argued that his client was a victim and not the perpetrator of the crime.
“Your honour at the point of arrest, the first respondent was hospitalized having been subjected to same drugs deceased had been. Upon regaining consciousness, he found out his colleague was dead, he was however arrested shortly after being discharged from hospital and police did not bother to hear what the doctors had to day,” he said.
Though he failed to provide a physical passport citing the deceased had his original passport, he said that he would provide a digital copy of his passport to prove his identity.
The suspects will now be detained for 10 days at the Kilimani police stations as investigations continue.
