NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 22- Two High Court Judges were on Thursday grilled at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters alongside their drivers, Shahidi News has established.
While detectives said it was over bribery claims, one of the Judge said he was not aware of his crime, since “there was nothing found” in his office after a search.
“I am equally surprised like you are,” the Judge said. “They also questioned my clerk.”
The detectives had a warrant issued by a Magistrate Court.
Before the Judges were taken to the DCI headquarters, detectives conducted an intensive search in their offices.
According to highly placed sources within the DCI, police were looking for evidence.
But what informed the search and subsequent grilling of the Judges?
One of the Judge was questioned over alleged intentions to take a Sh5 million bribe, over a certain family case that is pending in court.
But the Judge said no money was found in his office. His driver and clerk were also questioned over the same.
“We just wanted them to explain a few things,” a senior detective told Shahidi News. “They were not arrested.”
They were released after the questioning that took several hours.
The second Judge was questioned over a property he is accused of ‘taking’ from a party, in a case he presided over.
The alleged property, police said, is registered under his relative’s names at the Coast.
Head of Serious Crimes Unit Obadiah kuria led the detectives in questioning the two High Court Judges.
The move has raised eyebrows among legal practitioners and more so now when there is an existing tension between Judiciary and the Executive over a myriad of reasons, among them ignored court orders.
