KISII, Kenya, Jul 30- A couple that has been living in fear over yet to be established reasons were on Thursday burnt to death and as detectives dig into the incident, more questions than answers have emerged.

Moruri Mogoa, a retired teacher and his wife Florence who was a headteacher at Gekongo SDA school in Itumbe area died in an arson attack, at their home.

Their charred remains were found in their house on Thursday morning, just a day after their children went to school.

Locals and family members say the couple had received threats from a number of people, among them police officers.

But it is not yet clear what it was all about.

They had moved to the area after acquiring the land, which they also built their family home.

“The couple had even gone to local journalists to tell them their problems hoping to get help. They died seeking for help,” a family friend who spoke to Shahidi News said. He did not divulge more details.

Mogoa, who was chairing the community policing committee, had earlier confided on his friends that a local police officer had threatened him.

Locals believe the fire incident is linked to the threats the deceased received from the said officer.

The man had made several reports to Itumbe police Station over the same.

He is said to have led campaign against illicit brew in the area, which left many unhappy. Mostly those engaging in the vice.

The man is also said to have had a damning report on how security agents at the station are working with cartels to violently rob, embrace illicit brew and get involved in other forms of crime.

Sources said the deceased had pictures of number plates of certain vehicles transporting illegal drugs allegedly with the help of police.

“He even had with him names of police officers who are aiding illicit businesses,” the source who cannot be named because of safety concerns said.

“My father had earlier complained several times over threats to his life and we advised him and our mother to relocate to our maternal home,” the deceased daughter, Irene said.

While investigations are still underway, Kisii county commissioner Allan Machari said the deceased house had a lot of gas cylinders.

He said a gas cylinder might have exploded.

“Let is stop speculations of an arson attack to the deceased and let my investigating team examine the root cause of the fire,” he said.
