NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 1- Police in Nairobi are hunting down a man suspected to have killed his girlfriend, a few days to her scheduled flight to Qatar, where she had secured a job.
Joyce Wanjiru’s body was found by her sister lying in a pool of blood. The deceased had spent the night at her sister’s home in Kahawa West, Nairobi.
“All well since they even ate from one plate on Monday night,” the deceased’s sister, Hannah Waithera told Shahidi News.
The single mother of three was set to travel on June 30. She was however killed on Tuesday.
Her body had several stab wounds including one near the heart according to police and relatives who spoke to Shahidi News.
“She was a widow. Her husband passed on and was the only breadwinner for her three children,” police said.
Her family was still celebrating the news of their slain daughter securing a job in Qatar- which would have amounted to a quality life for her children amidst an economic meltdown in Kenya.
“People should look for alternative ways of resolving disputes other than violence. This is sad,” Kasarani police boss Peter Mwanzo said during an interview with Shahidi News.
The incident happened on July 27. She was last seen with her boyfriend only identified by police as Nyakundi.
“It is only a matter of time before we get him,” Mwanzo said. “He can run or hide, but the long arm of the law will catch up with him.”

On Tuesday, her mother Cecilia Nyambura had hoped that her life would be saved, but it was too late. She was dead.
“It is like the boyfriend did not want her to go to Qatar. It is sad,” a teary mother said. “I want this man to be arrested so that he does not harm anyone else.”
The two had dated for several months according to the mother. Nyambura was the third born-child in a family of four.
“The boyfriend had earlier in the day come for my sister. But he was drunk,” the deceased’s sister narrated. “They did not have issues but I suspect the boyfriend was not happy that my was sister was to depart for Qatar.”
The country has witnessed an increase in such cases and more so between March 2020 to date- the same period the COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged through the globe.
Couples struggling with finances in a failing economy and mental related issues have been attributed to the killings.
There has been heightened efforts to raise awareness against violence and the need to seek psychological help, if in need.
