NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 20- A man who threatened to kill his landlord over a rent dispute has been charged in court.
The said crime happened in Waithaka area in Dagoretti, Nairobi County.
The man, Anthony Muchiri is said to have threatened to kill his landlord on August 15, saying he is a member of the outlawed Mungiki sect.
“You will know I am a Mungiki member. I will kill you today,” he is said to have told the landlord, Charles Karugu.
He issued the threat after Karugu insisted he settles his pending amount of cash for rent, but instead said he wouldn’t, since he is jobless.
The court heard that he then ‘threw’ a thousand shilling note to the landlord but then pushed him as he was about to collect it from the ground.
While that led to a brief commotion, Muchiri is said to have later followed his landlord in a bar where he was watching a football match, armed with a panga. He again threatened to kill Karugu.
Muchiri also issued similar threats to his landlord’s wife. The matter was reported to police, who swiftly arrested Muchiri.
He denied the charges before principal magistrate Sharon Maroro and freed on a cash bail of Sh30,000 and an alternative surety bond of Sh100,000.
The case will be mentioned on August 30.
