NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 16-A senior police officer was on Thursday arrested after preliminary investigations linked him to a cache of bullets found in an abandoned vehicle in Nairobi.
David Okoth Opiyo, an Inspector of Police was arrested in connection to a shooting and subsequent recovery of ammunition on Wednesday along the Eastern bypass in Nairobi.
Opiyo is attached to the National Police Service Embakasi B campus.
The officer was arrested by officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Ruai office within Embakasi and is being held at Ruai Police station.
According to the police, Opiyo will be charged for the offence of being in possession of ammunition contrary to section 4A(1)(b) of the firearms Act Chapter 114 laws of Kenya.
He is linked to a shooting incident and recovery of ammunitions reported at Mihango Police station vide Ob. No. 2/15/9/2021 at 0030 Hrs, on Wednesday.
The suspect will be arraigned on Friday before Makadara Law court for miscellaneous application seeking custodial orders for further investigations.
It had been reported at the Mihango Police Station at 12:30 pm on Wednesday that 2040 bullets were found in a silver Mitsubishi Lancer of registration plate KAT 887G.
The driver of the saloon car had abandoned it opposite Be Energy Petrol Station on the Eastern Bypass shortly before occupants of another vehicle arrived at the scene and shot haphazardly at the Mitsubishi Lancer.
According to police, Inspector Opiyo was the driver of the Mitsubishi Lancer that suffered a rain of bullets.
Chrispine Otieno, a mechanic, had reported to police a shooting incident at his garage just opposite Be Energy Petrol Station.
According to the mechanic, a motor vehicle plate number KAT 887G, a Mitsubishi Lancer stopped, and immediately the occupant alighted, another vehicle white in colour registration number not taken stopped abruptly and an armed man came out and began shooting at the Mitsubishi Lancer.
Officers drawn from Kayole Police Station visited the scene and established that the Mitsubishi Lancer had twenty bullet holes on the right rear door with glass windows shuttered.
