LAIKIPIA, Kenya, Oct 14- Police have killed a gunman and recovered an M16 rifle with 25 bullets in the ongoing operation in the larger Laikipia area.
Gunmen have been shooting and killing local herders before escaping with their animals in a series of events.
The latest incident happened on Sunday when three people were killed in Ngarua area in a botched cattle rustling.
Police said another attempt in Ntimnariwo Sub-Location at the border of Laikipia and Samburu County prompted an operation that saw one suspect killed and recovery of the weapon.
The multi agency operation is ongoing in the region.
A special command team has since been deployed in the troubled areas, after attacks persisted.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi has asked the so called non-residents to leave the expansive Laikipia County.
This year alone, more than 16 people among them security officers have killed by armed bandits.
At one point, authorities claimed that the bandits were armed with more sophisticated weaponry than police.
