NAIROBI,Kenya, Oct, 19 – Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has jetted into the county ahead of his three day state visit.
The Malawi Head of State, who is accompanied by First Lady Mrs Monica Chakwera, will be the Chief Guest at this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations at Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga County tomorrow.
He was received by Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru.
President Chakwera and First Lady Mrs Monica Chakwera will be officially received at State House, Nairobi by their hosts President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on Thursday, October, 21.
Chakwera, was elected president after defeating Incumbent president Peter Mutharika during the 2020 elections.
The government announced that preparations for the annual celebrations are complete with at least 100,000 people already being vaccinated in the county ahead of the festivities.
Last month in a statement to newsrooms, Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Karanja Kibicho said the holiday will only be marked in Kirinyaga, a deviation from the traditional practice where county commissioners lead similar celebrations at county headquarters across the country.
Kibicho said the suspension is meant to stop the spread of Covid-19 in the country with new infections still rising despite the government’s vaccination efforts.
“Kirinyaga County will be the host for this year’s Mashujaa Day. No celebrations will be held in other counties as it has always been the case. We don’t want to escalate the spread of COVID-19, and that is why we are freezing similar activities in other counties,” Said PS Kibicho.
