NAKURU,Kenya, Nov, 26 – Implementation of Curriculum Reforms Principal Secretary Prof Fatuma Chege has revealed that the ministry of education has already kicked off the process of recruiting more teachers in order to fill the existing gaps as the country prepares to fully transition to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
Professor Chege said that apart from the infrastructure projects, more human resource was needed before the end of next year when transition from primary to junior secondary schools would happen.
“We expect a double intake of students in 2022 and the number of years in secondary school have been increased from four to six meaning more staff are required,” she said.
The ministry has already commenced engagements with the teacher’s employer TSC to ensure more teachers are recruited.
While officially opening the annual Education Evidence for Action (EE4A) conference on Thursday, professor Chege said that she was confident that the issue would be resolved with the government already showing commitment in improving educating in the country by setting aside Sh 10 billion for the construction of new classrooms nationwide.
“We know research will come in handy in addressing the rising challenges under this system and we are keen on seeking a holistic way of dealing with upcoming issues,” she said.
Funding For Construction of Classrooms
Education Cabinet Secretary professor George Magoha recently announced that the national treasury had availed to the ministry of education Sh4 billion kickstarting phase one of the competency based curriculum (CBC) school infrastructure development programme.
The monies are expected to fund the construction of 6,500 classrooms in 6,371 secondary schools across the country.
An additional Sh1.2 billion from the Ministry of Education infrastructure fund will also be feared towards the programme.
The move is expected to address the classroom deficit in public secondary schools in turn facilitating a smooth transition of CBC grade 6 learners to junior secondary in January 2023.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had directed the National Treasury to vail Sh8 billion towards the construction of 10,000 classrooms in secondary school.
The programme will be implemented in two phases.
A must agency team comprising the Ministry of Education, Interior and Coordination of National Government and other state agencies has already developed a road map of implementation of the project.
It is being implemented under the Kenya economic stimulus package, using local contractors within the vicinity of the secondary school to tap local skills and enhance economic opportunities.
“Contractors had by November 12, been registered with the deputy county commissioner of the respective sub-counties at no costs,” read section of the statement.
Local contractors will; now bid for the construction of the classrooms in schools in the respective home counties as from November, 22,2021.
