LAIKIPIA, Kenya, Dec 10 – Detectives in the newly established Kirima sub-county in Laikipia County are investigating an incident where Laikipia Women representative Cate Waruguru has been accused of assault.
Waruguru alongside others believed to be part of her entourage has been accused of committing the assault this past Tuesday during deputy president William Ruto’s tour of the area.
According to the victim Lucy Wairimu, while at Sipili trading centre, Waruguru is said to have called her and upon arriving by her vehicle she is said to have choked her alongside others.
“In Nyahururu she called me, I went to her, and then she started choking me alongside her people saying that I must support her and that no one is allowed to attend these meetings If we do not support UDA,” said Wairimu.
Wairimu said that she was accused of supporting another party despite attending Ruto’s campaign.
“She said that there is nothing that can be done to her…we had no issues, we do not know why she did what she did,” said Petrine Wanjiru, a witness.
Ruto’s tour of the area was marred by heckling with attempts to disrupt proceedings. The deputy president however stood his ground saying that he would not allow anyone to disrupt his meeting.
Kirima Sub County Police Commander, Donald Sailor said that detectives are already reviewing the incident and that the legislator would soon be summoned for questioning.
The matter was originally reported at the Sipili police station.
