MOMBASA, KENYA, Jan 5- Security has been beefed up in parts of Mombasa over the planned visit of State Counsellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi to the coastal city.
The minister, who will be on a two-day state visit, will meet President Kenyatta on Thursday in Mombasa and later undertake an inspection tour of the Kipevu Kenya Oil terminus.
Several Bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding will be signed by Key ministries between China and Kenya.
The visit, termed as timely by pundits, will focus on cementing China-Kenya cooperation on key areas such as Peace And Security, health, climate change, and blue and green technology transfer, circular economy, “and other vastly important areas for the transformation of Kenya’s economy and for the global economy in general.”
“The visit is part of the two countries’ efforts to strengthen the long-standing bilateral relations based on shared values and discuss the implementation of the outcomes of the 8th Ministerial Conference on the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC,) held in Dakar, Senegal from 28th – 30th November 2021.” Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Government officials say Kenya’s Big Four Agenda that has left the signature legacy projects for President Kenyatta has enjoyed significant support from China as part of the previous FOCSC programs of cooperation between the two countries.
“This will be reviewed during the bilateral conversations as well as with discussions with his Excellency the president,” officials said.
“In this regard, the minister of foreign affairs of China who is also the State Counsellor of the Chinese government will undertake an inspection tour of the Kipevu Kenya Oil terminus, a huge legacy project of the Kenyatta administration that has significance ramifications for Kenya as well as the entire eastern and central Africa region.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kenya Raychelle Omamo will meet the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in Mombasa.
She will also lead the bilateral consultations between the government of Kenya and the government of China.
She will be joined by CS colleagues from the ministries of National Treasury, Ministry of Transport and Housing, Ministry of Health, Ministry Of Trade, Ministry Of ICT, Ministry Of Agriculture, and other government officials.
Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said several Bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding will be signed by Key ministries between China and Kenya.
Minister Yi began his visit in Eritrea and Comoros on January 4 and is expected to fly to Kenya on Wednesday.
