NAIROBI,Kenya, Jan, 5 – Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Executive Officer, Twalib Mbarak has been elected to the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA)’s executive committee for a period of three years.
Mbarak will take up the new role representing African states.
The new role comes amidst Mbarak’s efforts to strengthen institutions tackling corruption in the country.
During last years’s Anti-Corruption day, the EACC boss revealed that a total of 163 high impact investigations on corruption and economic crimes were concluded and files submitted to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
This was further highlighted in the commission’s report for the Financial Year 2019/2020.
Mbarak in his address said that assets worth approximately Sh 12 billion that were acquired through corruption were recovered.
Within the same period 14 applications were filed in court for preservation of assets with an estimated value of Sh 9.4 billion.
During his tenure, Mbarak has steered the EACC towards tackling high impact investigations that has led to asset recovery through various multi-sectoral approaches.
Institutions such as the National Council on Administration of Justice (NCAJ), Multi-Agency Team (MAT) on corruption and economic crime, Kenya Leadership and Integrity Forum (KLIF), Forum of Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices (CCIOs), and County Governments have been credited for some of the milestones achieved in the war against corruption.
Meanwhile, members of the newly elected executive committee that also saw China’s Simon PEH elected as commissioner held their first virtual meeting Wednesday discussing the new regional coordination mechanism as well as the implementation schedule for the next three years.
The president and the four Vice -Presidents of the IAACA are expected to take up the role of Regional coordinators of the region they belong to and as a result they will be expected to work closely with the executive committee members.
This will include, coordinating with anti-corruption authorities within the region with a view to devising and implementing initiatives to promote networking and collaboration among members within the same regional group.
This will entail understanding the training needs of anti-corruption authorities, organising regional training activities,capacity building activities and regular meetings with the members.
They will also be tasked with strengthening the relationship between the IAACA and the regional anti-corruption organisations and networks.
Since its establishment in 2006, the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) has been instrumental in the fight against corruption.
It is an independent, non-political, anti-corruption organization, composed of institutions responsible for investigation, prosecution and prevention of corruption around the world.
Over 140 countries and regions participate in the Association through organizational and individual membership.
