NAKURU,Kenya, Jan,14 – Following widespread concerns over the status of the Gilgil mental hospital , the government will now pump Sh 250 million to facilitate its upgrade.
The ministry of health in recent years agreed to take up full time management of the facility following a request for the Nakuru county government following its deplorable condition amidst increased patients.
“We have engaged the national government which has agreed to take over this hospital and this will involve rehabilitating it at a cost of Sh250m,” said Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui,.
Kinyanjui said that the national government has already set aside funds for the rehabilitation exercise.
Cases of Kenyans suffering from mental health issues has been on the rise in the county.
The facility which is located within Gilgil sub-county hospital has been described as critical in health care management .
“The current situation has been worsened by the use of drugs mainly among our youths and this facility comes in handy in addressing this,” said Governor Kinyanjuif referring to increased mental health cases in the county.
The health facility has been understaffed and under-resourced for years.
The hospital has equally been unable to cater to scores of patients abandoned by their relatives.
