MOGADISHU,Somalia.Jan, 16 – Veteran journalist and the spokesperson of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mohammed Ibrahim Moalimu has been injured in a suicide bombing attack in Mogadishu.
The senior government officer’s vehicle was targeted on Sunday, inflicting injuries on Moalimu who previously survived four other explosions, including the 2009 Hotel Shamo bombing that killed about 25 people.
The office of the Prime Minister condemned the attack which has been claimed by the Al Qaeda affiliate terrorist group, Al-Shabaab.
A brief statement from the Office of the prime minister also states that Moalimu is in a stable condition following today’s attack.
“The prime minister strongly condemns the odious terrorist attack targeting Government Spokesman, Mr Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu who sustained injuries today but is in stable condition,” said the office of the Prime Minister.
Moalimu resigned as the Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) in December 2020, after being appointed as the Spokesperson of the Federal Government of Somalia and Senior Media Adviser to the Prime Minister.
According to Sources, the senior journalist is receiving treatment at Digfer Hospital.
Moalimu has been vocal in defending journalist’s rights and standing against abuses against members of the press across Somalia.
He has been outspoken in his position as the FESOJ Secretary General.
Moalimu has also previously worked as the Mogadishu reporter for the Somali service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The explosion targeting the government spokesperson comes days after a suicide bomber exploded a vehicle loaded with explosives, killing at least ten people.
