NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 19- Presidential candidate Jimmy Wanjigi has accused police of destroying property worth Sh10 million during his arrest.
The alleged damage was done at his Kwacha offices in Westland, Nairobi.
Wanjigi was arrested on Tuesday after a 20-hour siege, that ended with his release without taking a plea.
The court released Wanjigi after it was established that he had acquired stay orders restraining the police from arresting him.
As such, a warrant of arrest issued against him and his wife Irene was also lifted on Wednesday.
“They forcefully, without a court order broke into office premises and caused damage to property worth of Sh10M shillings, just because they could not respect a court order,” he said through his lawyer Willis Otieno.
“It’s the abuse of your office and the judicial process to purport to arrest to arraign the suspect against the High Court order stopping any arrest and charges against my clients.”
The lawyer had asked Senior principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi to release his client, for him to be able to continue with his presidential quest.
Wanjigi is seeking to fly the Orange Democratic Movement flag, but will first have to battle it out with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is also the party leader.
“I now do pray that we convert ourselves to law abiding citizens. The drama of last evening should stop,” the lawyer said.
Wanjigi was arrested by a team of specialized officers drawn from various units among them the Anti-Terror Police Unit and the General Service Unit elite squad, Recce.
