NYERI, Kenya, Jan 21- The National Police College School of Leadership has received an extreme makeover as part of the ongoing police reforms and modernization programme, spearheaded by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The School of Leadership that offers courses to middle level and senior management cadres of Police Officers, was unveiled on Thursday by President Kenyatta, shortly after presiding over the inaugural direct entry Inspectorate course at the National Police College Main Campus.
The towering complex replaced the dilapidated pre-independence wooden structures, that served as classrooms for cadet Inspectors and Superintendents, who have trained at the college since its inception in 1948.
Overlooking the senior staff A-Mess, the imposing complex complete with a state-of-the-art theatre, digital resource hub, officers’ mess, and an administration wing among other amenities is designed as a one-stop-shop for senior officers pursuing their careers in policing.
Also unveiled by the head of state was a block of classrooms to accommodate senior officers who shall be undertaking their promotional courses at the prestigious police training institution.
The new block couldn’t have come at a better time since the college headed by Japheth Koome, the current commandant, is currently implementing a new training curriculum in line with the ongoing police reforms.
While reiterating the government’s commitment towards improving the welfare of police officers, President Kenyatta, noted that the government had introduced a comprehensive medical insurance cover for all police officers and their families, a group life insurance cover and a house allowance for every police officer.
He added that the government would continue investing more resources in tooling and equipping of police officers, to enable them deal with the contemporary policing demands of time.
So far, 35,400 police officers have been recruited to join the National Police Service, in the last 10 years.
