BUSIA,Kenya, Jan, 29 – The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) alongside a multiagency security team consisting of police in Busia arrested two people found in possession of illegal elephant tusks.
According to preliminary reports, the tusks weighing 26 kilograms are estimated to have a street value of Sh9.1 million.
Busia sub-county deputy police commander Stephen Kimunya said that police laid an ambush for the suspects at Korinda area following a tip-off from members of the public on Friday.
The two, a Kenyan and Ugandan were spotted transporting the tusks aboard a motorcycle.
“They were concealed in sacks containing dry cassava, we believe it might have come from Uganda,” said Kimunya.
The are now being held a the Busia police station before being arraigned.
