BARINGO,Kenya, Feb, 1 – Police in Kabarnet, Baringo county have have launched a manhunt for East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Florence Jematia over alleged incitement remarks.
Despite being summoned by police she is said to have gone into hiding according to Baringo County Commissioner Abdirizack Jaldesa.
The EALA MP is said to have uttered the reckless, incendiary and divisive comments calling on residents to raise funds in order to purchase firearms.
She is said to have made the remarks during a public meeting in Mochongoi, on Sunday,January, 30,2022.
In the now viral video, the legislator is seen inciting the residents and saying that the government had failed to protect residents. She is further seen mobilising for the creation of a ‘paybill number’ to raise the required funds.
“We cannot continue holding peace meetings over the years without a formidable solution, yet women and children spend the night in the bushes due to displacement. We have lost more than enough people in the war-torn area and this should be stopped,” said Jematia.
“We need a paybill number now to collect funds to purchase guns. If people can afford motorcycles, then they can afford the arms as well. Local leaders should also allocate funds to the same to solve this menace if the government is (reluctant) to hear our cries,” she said.
Her remarks come amidst a multi-agency security operation in the region following increased insecurity as a result of bandit attacks.
Hundreds of people are said to have been displaced from their homes as a result of recent attacks.
Police meanwhile say that two other politicians summoned over the same presented themselves to detectives and recorded statements.
As the country fast approaches an electioneering season, Kenyans have been urged to preach peace and shun remarks that can incite others into violence.
Several politicians nationwide have been arrested and arraigned over hate speech and incitement to violence remarks.
