NYANDARUA,Kenya, Feb, 14 – Two years after a two year-old girl was allegedly murdered by his stepfather in Silale village, Laikipia County and secretly buried, police have now exhumed the body amidst a probe surrounding her death.
According to preliminary reports, the accused Hardson Nyamwamba Oburi, 27, had buried his step daughter just 20 meters from his home after stashing her body in a sack.
The suspect’s wife, Lister Onjeri, 26. is said to have reported the matter to police after being sworn into secrecy under threat not to reveal what happened.
Onjeri said that the suspect committed the act on December,24,2020 -He is said to have hit her on the head.
“On that day I went the river to wash clothes, when i came back found my child was dead…my husband told me that she fell from a bodaboda and landed on her stomach. When I saw she was not alive, he then held my mouth and told me not to scream. He then took my daughter dug a grave and buried her,” said Onjeri.
The deceased’s mother said that she initially sought to take her daughter to hospital but her husband refused saying.”she is already dead.”
“People may ask why I didn’t speak but but my life was tough, he (husband) used to threaten me and said that if I said anything he would kill me. Even when I spoke to neighbors there was always an issue,” she said.
The matter was later reported on January 25,2022 after the suspect’s wife confided in the area chief and police who commenced investigations.
Court order Monday gave detectives the go ahead to exhume the body.
“The girl lived in Maina area, he (Oburi) allegedly committed another murder some years back but he was released under suspicious circumstances. He is also someone that was accused of committing petty crimes like stealing,”said Joseph Muraya,Area Chief.
The suspect is currently in police custody amidst investigations.
“After did that act, he took my phones and told me that he didn’t want me to talk with my parents, He was the one that answered calls and handed me the phone to speak..when I attempted to say that I was suffering he would threaten me with a knife and say that he would kill me,’ she said
“When i was free i got a chance and went to the police and told police what happened,” said Onjeri.
The exhumed body is being preserved at the Nyahururu County Referral hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination.
