NAIROBI,Kenya,Feb, 24 – Three police officers were on Wednesday night arrested while extorting money from members of the public within Kariobangi roundabout, Nairobi County.
A report was made to the police that the three were harassing members of the public and a team of officers was dispatched to the area.
Chief Inspector David Oleshani of Starehe Sub-County then mobilised officers from Kariobangi and Huruma police stations.
They managed to arrest Constable Moses Basweti of Vigilance House, Administration Police (AP) Constable Francis Ouma of Mathare camp and AP Constable Martin Mindelo.
Among the victims was a man who had come from Rongai and was arrested for not wearing a face mask.
The officers were escorted to Huruma police station where they are being detained.
“After they were arrested, they identified themselves as police officers but could not say what they were doing there,” an officer told Shahidi News.
They were searched and found in possession of a pair of handcuffs and two staff ID cards, commonly referred to as the Certificate of Appointment.
A number of officers have engaged in a wide variety of crimes while they are off-duty including extortion, robbery, harassment, and even domestic violence.
Some have also been found to move to other jurisdictions where they commit crimes and retreat to their parent stations.
Late last year, detectives revealed that there were two notorious officers from Kamukunji police station who would even plant drugs, mostly bhang, on an arrested person before extorting money from them.
