NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 26- Efforts by presidential hopeful Jimi Wanjigi to join the Orange Democratic Movement National Delegates Conference at Kasarani were on Saturday thwarted, after a group of rowdy youths left him scampering for safety.
The businessman cum politician had intended to join in the NDC, just moments after ODM leader Raila Odinga was endorsed by the delegates to be its presidential flag bearer.
Wanjigi sought refuge at the police station within Kasarani stadium after the agitated group of youthful men accused him of being a political mole.
Wanjigi accused Odinga of changing for the worst, since March 2018, when he shook hands with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“He is a different man,” Wanjigi said in a press conference at a city hotel.
“We were welcomed until we got to the entrance of the VIP, at that entrance the Secretary-General ordered some goons to chase as out.”
Wanjigi said all he wanted was a fair chance in the party to compete for the presidency under the party but has been met with great opposition including kicks and blows.
He warned other aspirants in the party that they are going to experience a similar treatment as the country headed to the August 9 polls.
He is set to pursue his presidential parties on a different platform.
“I ask you today to reject this man that is being brought to you as a project by an outgoing president that is unpopular,” Wanjigi stated.
Though Wanjigi has maintained that he is an ODM member, the party’s Nairobi Branch chairman George Aladwa recently stated that the businessman cum politician is not a listed delegate from Nairobi County.
“This is to, therefore, to caution one Jimi Wanjigi to desist from claiming to be a legitimate delegate when he is just an ordinary and life member of the party,” said Aladwa.
