NAIROBI,Kenya, Mar, 18 – Martin Waitima, was arraigned Friday after being seen on a video clip that later went viral, of him assaulting a police officer along the busy Uhuru Highway.
He was slapped with two charges of assaulting a police officer and resisting lawful arrest.
According to court documents, the accused hit a bodaboda rider while on the wrong lane and despite the victim, a traffic police officer’s attempts to resolve the matter, he turned violent.
He is said to have hit him before tearing up his uniform.
“You are charged that on the March 17, 2022 along Uhuru highway in Nairobi, within Nairobi county, willfully and unlawfully assaulted no 88589 mark Kirimi Muriara who was at the time of the said assault acting in due execution of his duties as a police officer” read a sequin of the charge sheet.
Appearing before chief magistrate Wendy Micheni, the accused sought for a lenient bond term while also denying the charges.
Through his lawyer he also sought an out of court settlement saying that he wanted to resolve the matter amicably.
“This is a normal assault case only that it involves a police officer who is the complainant in this matter, I am pleading for a lenient cash bail on behalf of my client, I have indicated to the prosecution that we wish to settle this matter out of court “Said the accused’s lawyer.
Waitima was released on a Sh30,000 cash bail.
