MOMBASA, Kenya, Apr, 12 – A police officer has died by alleged suicide hours after another officer attached to the presidential escort unit reportedly shot himself dead in Juja,Kiambu county.
A report filed at Kiambeni Police Station Tuesday morning indicated police constable David Koech shot himself dead.
“It was reported today by Ramadan Ali of Concordia Police Post that while they were patrolling together with Kiprono Koech at Bandari Sacco wall they found David Koech Kurgat lying facing downward outside the container in a pool of blood oozing from the back,” read part of the report.
An AK47 rifle serial number KP 5501874 was found beside his body.
Officers from Kisauni Sub County Police Headquarters visited the scene and established that the deceased was relieved of duty on Monday.
Sergeant Benard Changwony together with the deceased left for the Station but the former proceeded to respond to a distress call.
“It is suspected that the deceased secretly sneaked back to the scene where he shot himself on the left side of the chest and died instantly,” said police.
According to police, nobody heard the gunshot.
The body has since been moved to Coast General Mortuary awaiting autopsy.
No notice of information was found.
One spent cartridge of 7.62mm was found at the scene and 29 rounds of 7.62mm were recovered from the magazine.
The rifle AK 47 S/NO.KP 5501874 was also recovered at the scene.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigation drawn from Kisauni Police station is investigating the matter.
Presidential Escort Unit Officer Alleged Suicide
A police officer attached to the presidential escort unit was found dead at his house inside the Juja Sub County GSU camp.
According to preliminary reports, the officer allegedly shot himself to death.
A police statement indicated that the deceased, Samuel Ngatia shot himself in the head, “where the bullet entered on the right side and exited on the left side of the head.”
Police managed to recover a Jericho pistol with 13 rounds of 9mm allegedly used during the incident.
A second magazine with 15 rounds of 9 mm and Tavor SMG serial number KP 458060012 with two magazines loaded with 30 rounds of 5.56 mm each were all recovered in his house.
Two spent cartridges and one bullet head were also recovered at the scene.
The body of the officer was moved to Kenyatta University Funeral Home pending a postmortem examination..
