NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 20- A new deal brokered in State House has seen the comeback of former Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe to the city politics.
Under the deal, Igathe will be seeking to become Nairobi’s next governor as the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya alliance flag bearer.
Igathe will now vie against Senator Johnson Sakaja of the Deputy President William Ruto-led United Democratic Alliance in the race for City Hall.
With the deal, the fate of the current governor, Anne Kananu, and businessman Richard Ngatia -who is also in the race, has been sealed.
City businesswoman Anne Kagure was also seeking the Jubilee party’s ticket, which is now set to be given to Igathe.
Ngatia has spent millions of shillings campaigning and mounting billboards across the city. He is however seen as one with a lot of political baggage due to alleged accountability issues. His education qualifications have also been questioned.
Igathe will be deputised by Timothy Wanyonyi-who is the current Westland Member of Parliament.
Wanyonyi is of the Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Igathe served as a Deputy Governor under the chaotic rule of Mike Sonko- but quit after 6 months.
Sonko would later be impeached under controversial circumstances.
The former Nairobi Governor has now cast his nets in Mombasa, hoping to succeed Hassan Joho, who has served two constitutionally mandated terms.
