NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr, 23 – All roads on Saturday unusually led to Mtihani House, the headquarters of the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) where education cabinet secretary Prof. George Magoha officially released the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results.

According to KNEC, a total of 826,807 candidates sat the examination in the 2021 KCSE Examination compared to 747,161 candidates in 2020.

This represented an increase of 79,646 candidates (10.66 per cent).

Of the 826,807 candidates who sat the 2021 KCSE Examination, 421,318 were male while 405,489 were female, representing 50.96 per cent and 49.04 per cent of the total candidature respectively.

In what now appears to be a return to ‘winning ways’ Mang’u High School in Kiambu county produced the best candidate nationally.

Jeriel Ndeda Obura emerged as the top candidate after obtaining an impressive Grade A (87.103)

Mang’u High School produced three top candidates in the list of top 15 candidates nationally.

Kenya High School meanwhile also triumphed in the 2021 KCSE exams producing four candidates in the list of top 15 candidates nationally.

There were 1,138 candidates who obtained an overall Grade A in the 2021 KCSE Examination compared to 893 candidates in 2020.

“The number of candidates with minimum university entry qualification of Grade C+ and above rose to 145,145 (17.49 per cent) in the year 2021 KCSE Examination compared to 143,140 (19.03 per cent) in 2020. The percentage of candidates with a Mean Grade of C+ and above has declined from 19.03 to 17.49 The number of candidates with a minimum TVET Diploma courses qualification of grade C- and above in 2021 was 325,896 (39.27 per cent),” said Magoha.

In the 2021 KCSE examination, Sub-county secondary schools, which are ideally day schools, registered impressive performance.

A total of 17,327 attained a mean grade of C+ and above, with 128 of them getting a mean grade of A- and above.

“This demonstrates that children can excel in Sub-County Day Schools,” said the CS.

In the 2021 KCSE Examination, 11 subjects recorded a significant improvement in performance, compared to 19 subjects that recorded a significant improvement in performance in 2020.

“This shows a decline in performance in 2021. There was no significant change in performance in seven of the subjects offered during the 2021 KCSE examination,”

All candidates are advised to collect their results from their respective examination centres.

“As per our recent practice, individual candidates’ results can also be accessed by sending a candidate’s index number followed by the initials “KCSE” through a Short Message Service (SMS) to 20076,” said the CS.

Headteachers will be required to download and print the online results slips for candidates in their schools and authenticate the same before they are released to parents, guardians, or candidates.
