NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 25- Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga says the motive of the Uasin Gishu chopper attack on April 2 was to “kill us.”
Odinga came under attack by goons said to have been hired when he was leaving the burial ceremony of the late Mzee Jackson Kibor.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi and top security officers have since said the attack was widely condemned by leaders among them President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, had been planned.
More than 15 suspects were arrested and arraigned in court.
“Some goons were hired and they actually wanted to kill us,” he said.
Odinga was speaking on Sunday in Washington DC during his ongoing tour of the United States.
He said he would have been harmed alongside his delegation, were it not for the police.
“The goons had the plans in place. They knew at what time we would arrive and the type of transport we had planned on using,” he said.
Other than the incident, he said the campaign period has so far been peaceful.
His main competitor, the Deputy President has also been under attack by goons during his political events.
“So far things have moved smoothly up to where we are,” the Orange Democratic Movement leader said.
He is expected in the country on Wednesday, ahead of the burial of former President, the late Mwai Kibaki.
Odinga is in the US with a host of leaders among them NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua and Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
Others are Homabay Town MP Opondo Kaluma, Homabay Senator Moses Kajwang’, Kathiani MP Robert Mbui and former Kenya Ambassador to the US Elkanah Odembo.
