LAMU, Kenya, May 9- A Kenya Defence Force officer is in police custody after he shot dead a colleague under unclear circumstances moments after resuming duty from a short leave.

It was reported at Hindi Police Station by Sergeant Evans Tito of the military police that one Ezekiel Longor fatally shot Private Osman Dokota for unknown reasons.

Police officers from Hindi police station visited the scene and established that the suspect was coming from leave and when he arrived at the camp, he went straight to one of the tents and grabbed an AK rifle and started shooting indiscriminately.

He grabbed another AK47 and continued shooting.

Other KDF officers managed to disarm the suspect and 27 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the magazine.

The soldiers later established that Private Osman Dokota of 21KR had been fatally shot in the lower abdomen.

The suspect was arrested by military police and taken to Manda Military base awaiting handing over to the police.

The body of the deceased was flown to Manda Military base before being taken to Mpeketoni hospital morgue for post-mortem and later buried in accordance with the Islamic faith of the deceased.

Police officers collected at least 21 cartridges of 7.62×39 spent ammunition from the scene.

The two AK47 rifles that were used by the suspect were handed over to the police for ballistic analysis and the suspect was awaited to be charged with murder.

It remained unclear as to what led the officer to grab the rifles and shoot indiscriminately at the camp.
