NAIROBI, Kenya, May, 18 – Former police spokesperson Charles Owino is set to return to the national police service after ‘quitting’ active politics prematurely.
According to sources close to the former spokesperson, he is set to return to the service where he will be redeployed, with the National Police Service Commission stating that his request for early retirement had been rejected.
The news is alleged to have sent shockwaves to his political ambitions.
The NPSC has however not yet commented on the matter. Attempts to speak to Owino too proved futile.
Owino had initially left the service to contest the Siaya gubernatorial seat before later agreeing to deputize United Democratic Movement (UDM) party candidate Nicholas Gumbo.
News of his exit was confirmed by UDM Secretary-General David Ohito.
“He served the party with the letter to quit the race. Yes, it is true,” he said.
The party has since commenced an exercise to search for his replacement.
Siaya senator Senior counsel James Orengo is among other candidates seeking the county’s top job.
Sources within the NPS say that his return to the service was not an easy decision with some senior officers opposed to the move.
A full update is expected to be issued in the coming days as to where exactly Owino will be redeployed.
