NAIROBI, Kenya, May, 19 – Shelmith Kiprono alias Jerop will be a guest of the state at the Langata police station after she was arrested and accused of stealing cash and jewelry worth Sh104 million from her employer.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are already undertaking investigations with preliminary reports indicating the theft was planned alongside others.
Already, sleuths have revealed that Sh2.5 million has been recovered from the accused’s home. Her employer Samar Al-kindy reported the incident.
Kiprono was presented before Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Bhoke at the Kibera law courts.
Court documents revealed that Kiprono stole Sh4 million, 806000 in US dollars, and jewelry worth Sh4 million all valued at Sh104 million.
Also charged in court are four suspects said to have been her accomplices.
Detectives have since sought custodial orders to detain Kiprono who is the main suspect until May 26, 2022.
A team from the DCI’s Special Service Unit and Criminal Intelligence and Research Bureau arrested her in Eldoret town.
She led the detectives to her hideout in Kabarnet Township where she had rented a house.
At the rented home detectives recovered receipts for items she purchased between May 6 and 13,2022 as well as Sh372, 000 and USD20200.
The incident was reported on May,5,2022 by the victim’s other employee Athanus Mutiso.
The victim,Samar Al-kindy resides at Sun Valley Estate in Langata. The victim was not at home during the incident and had traveled to Oman to meet her husband on April,29,2022.
Court documents signed by investigating officer, inspector Daniel Opiyo, revealed that Kiprono who resides in the servant’s quarter was not in the compound and the gate was locked on the day – another employee was scheduled to bring contractors to the home for certain works when the theft was realized.
The victim’s sister had been called quickly and provided a key to the house.
Attempts to reach Kiprono on phone also proved futile.
“At the sitting room, they found a cupboard attached to the wall where the owner of the house encloses a metallic safe open and the box enclosing the safe on the floor there were impressions on the floor tiles of something heavy having been dragged from the cupboard out of the house through the main door,” the affidavit reads in part.
Kiprono will be charged on May,26,2022.
