NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun, 4 – Deputy President William Ruto has been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest the presidential elections on August 9, 2022.
While appearing at the Bomas of Kenya before the commission, the electoral body chairperson Wafula Chebukati said that Ruto had met all the qualifications for clearance as a presidential candidate alongside his running mate, Mathira legislator Rigathi Gachagua.
They will contest for the country’s top political seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
Despite Ruto’s political differences with his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta, the former will seek to succeed his once ‘political buddy’ as the country’s commander in chief.
IEBC while clearing Ruto revealed that he had met all the necessary criteria including providing at least 48,000 signatures from 24 counties supporting their bid, minimum educational qualifications, and passing the integrity test.
Ruto after receiving the clearance said that he would kick off the ‘mother of all political campaigns,’ promising victory for the Kenya Kwanza Alliance at the polls.
“I am delighted to receive the certificate that will allow Kenya Kwanza to participate in this year’s election. Kenya Kwanza has confidence in IEBC that it is up to the task and I commit that my team will work with you diligently so we can have a credible, free, fair, and verifiable general elections,” said Ruto.

Ruto said that his political manifesto will improve the country’s economic fortunes and uplift citizens from poverty.
