NAKURU, Kenya, Jun, 7 – As the country fast approaches the August 9, 2022 elections, concerns have been raised over the increased cases of organized crimes across the Rift Valley.

According to Human Rights Groups, the incidents are a result of organized gangs, banditry, and land disputes.

Some politicians have been faulted for the incidents with many now being accused of fueling violence for political gain.

Recently during a tour of the region, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) identified Nakuru County as one of the hotspots ahead of the August elections.

“Some politicians are using land ownership disputes, cattle rustling, and even the organized gangs to cause havoc and it’s time the necessary arms of the government acted,” said Calvin Muga from MIDRIFT Human Rights Network.

Mega said that the situation was worsened by cases of bandit attacks and cattle rustling around Kerio Valley with scores left dead and hundreds other forced to flee from their homes.

“Women and the disabled face financial and violence challenges during the election and we are keen to support them during this period,” he said.

Meanwhile, the chairlady Maendeleo ya Wanawake in Naivasha Esther Nyokabi said that security agencies need to prioritize the safety of women during this electioneering period.

“We support the ongoing peace campaigns by various groups before the general elections and our prayers are for peaceful coexistence,” she said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i warned politicians from fueling violence saying that the government will not hesitate from taking stern action against them.
