NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 8- Deputy President William Ruto led United Democratic Alliance has written to the National Intelligence Service (NIS), protesting the use of their alleged reports for political propaganda.
This is after remarks by Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Karanja Kibicho, who claimed Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate will emerge top of the August 9 presidential election with 60 percent.
He cited an alleged NIS report whose details are not in the public.
In the letter seen by Shahidi News, UDA is seeking to know the validity of Kibicho’s claims, which they have termed “reckless”, saying they have the potential of undermining the forthcoming election.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has thrown his support behind Odinga and as a result, top government officials are actively rooting for his election as the fifth President.
“What remedial measures were taken by the National Intelligence Service in light of the outright breach and abuse of its core mandate given the risk posed by the reckless use of intelligence information to the peace and security of the nation?” UDA, through a letter written by Mutuma Gichuru and Associate Advocates, posed.
The Deputy President’s party has warned it would sue the NIS boss Phillip Kameru, if an explanation was not given on their list of concerns.
UDA said it was ready to file a motion to have the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji investigate and charge the people involved in the intelligence leakage, or misuse of the same for propaganda.
“Unless the Board or the Office of the Director-General of NIS provides a reasoned and acceptable finding or explanation to the complaint herein within 14 days of this letter, the Complainant shall pursue further legal action to safeguard a peaceful electoral process that now stands compromised by the unlawful, unconstitutional and reckless use of intelligence information by the Principal Secretary for Interior to further the interests of a political party,” reads the letter.
Kibicho made the remarks during an evening news show on Citizen Television, on the eve of Kenya’s Madaraka Day celebrations.
The party has since written to DPP Haji seeking prosecution of six Cabinet Secretaries and Kibicho for engaging in active succession politics contrary to the law.
The Cabinet Secretaries include ICT’s Joe Mucheru.
DP Ruto during various rallies has dismissed the alleged NIS report, whole exuding confidence in emerging the winner of the August 9 presidential election.
The Deputy President has also accused the so called ‘deep state and system’ of planning to interfere with the elections and raised the concerns with the European Union and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
