NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 18 – The Office of The Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has asked the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to broaden the scope of investigations over the authenticity of the degree certificates of Nairobi Gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja and his counterpart Machakos gubernatorial candidate Wavinya Ndeti.
Mutyambai had in a statement directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch an immediate probe against the two.
Similarly in a statement to newsrooms, DPP Nordin Haji has now called for similar investigations against other aspirants.
“In addition, the DPP has directed the IG to investigate the role of government agencies and commission to determine whether they helped/and or assisted in commission or omission of any offenses with the issuance of clearance certificates pursuant to section 22 of the Elections Act 2011: Section 6 and 19 of the Election Offenses Act 2016: Section 13 of the Leadership and Integrity Act 2012: And Section 47 A of the Anti Corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003,” read the statement.
The DPP said that it was imperative the poll body IEBC complete the exercise in order to adequately prepare for the August 9, 2022 elections.
“The ODPP calls for the expeditious completion of this investigation not later than 1st July 2022 and the submission of the investigative reports to the ODPP for action if any,”
NPS On Fake Degree Certificate Probe
police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said that the national police service has commenced criminal investigations into the genuineness of the candidate’s certificates which were presented before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for clearance.
“The Inspector-General of the NPS has directed the Director, DCI to conduct speedy investigations into authenticity and genuineness of all the certificate, testimonials, and respective documentation presented to the IEBC for clearance by the two aforesaid aspirants to a logical conclusion,” said Shioso.
Sakaja has defended the authenticity of his degree certificate reiterating that he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management (External) from Teams University in Uganda.
The Nairobi senator had on Friday presented himself to the DCI claiming to have been summoned though the Investigating agency denied the claims and termed his allegations as ‘fake news’.
He is now expected to appear before the Commission of University Education (CUE) on Monday to prove the authenticity of his degree certificate.
Wavinya who was hoping to clinch the Machakos gubernatorial seat is meanwhile being investigated for forgery allegations.
Gideon Ngewa and Kisilu Mutisya had filed a petition before the poll body’s dispute resolution committee, calling for the revocation of her clearance certificate on the grounds that she did not meet the threshold.
Ndeti claims to have obtained a degree (Bsc) in Computing Studies from South Bank University London.
