NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun, 22 – It’s a reprieve for Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja after the Commission for University Education (CUE) withdrew the letter revoking the recognition of his degree certificate.
Sakaja has long defended that his degree from Team University in Uganda is authentic.
The Nairobi senator filed a contempt of court case against CUE chairperson Professor Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha for allegedly violating the orders of the court.
Sakaja through his counsel argued that Chacha contravened the orders after addressing the media On Friday, June, 17 regarding this degree certificate.
“On the even date, 17th June 2022 at 7:00 p.m, the Contemnor herein one PROF. CHACHA NYAIGOTI-CHACHA who is the Chairman of the Board of the Respondent, went live on all major National Televisions and other media fora wherein he issued a press statement whose contents were a mockery and contemptuous of the Court’s orders earlier served upon the Respondent,” reads court documents.
CUE chairperson was further accused of issuing a second press satinet on June,20,2022.
“THAT later, on 20th June 2022 at around 5:00 p.m. the Contemnor again released a signed press statement to all media houses , wherein he ostensibly made reference to the Applicant, the orders of status quo ante , and the court process in general.”
CUE while revoking the letter said that investigations on the matter are ongoing and as such the court lacks the jurisdiction to exercise authority over the matter.
Last week, Sakaja was directed by the commission to provide material evidence proving his academic qualifications among them his admission letter, student ID, transcripts, receipts of tuition fees paid to Teams University, graduation photos, and a list of lecturers who taught him at the institution.
