BOMET, Kenya, Jun, 26 – Several people were nabbed after a crackdown on illicit brewers was conducted in Bomet East Sub-County, area Deputy County Commissioner Joash Abongo has said.
Police records indicate that twelve suspects were arrested with over 500 litres of busaa in the chemaner and Kembu divisions in the 4.00am raid.
The report further indicates another suspect was nabbed with ten litres of chang’aa in her hideout.
Abongo assured residents that his office would not relent in the fight against illicit brews until all suspects are apprehended.
“In our security meetings, we have given this particular agenda first priority with other stakeholders and the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO). We agreed to completely mop up illicit brews before August this year,” he said.
The deputy county commissioner affirmed that he is currently leading the crackdown in his area of jurisdiction together with the national police service officers.
Abongo further commended the local judicial arm for what he termed as cooperation in punishing the perpetrators in accordance with the law.
“We have arrested quite a number of offenders since the crackdown was rolled out, I want to thank the judiciary for their support through giving out punitive fines aimed at curtailing selling and consumption of illicit brews,” noted the administrator.
Suspects arrested from the two instances were booked at the Longisa Police Station
Earlier on, Bomet County Commissioner Beverly Opwora had urged chiefs and their assistants as well as village elders to work as a team within their jurisdiction and embrace the war on the vice, which has affected learning among young people in the area.
“Through the local leadership of area chiefs and the Nyumba Kumi initiative, I am urging you to engage the people through regular barazas for them to understand the adverse effects of illicit brews on the country’s economy and education of our children,” explained Opwora.
