NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 30- There was panic at the Gusii Stadium in Kisii County, after a teargas canister exploded during an event attended by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential running mate Martha Karua.
Police headquarters in a statement said the circumstances around the incident were being investigated.
It is not yet clear whether the teargas canister was discharged by a police officer or a civilian.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident is a matter currently under investigation,” the National Police Service spokesperson Bruno Shioso said.
He said “a firm and decisive shall be taken” against anyone who will be found responsible of the act.
Local journalists attending the event reported chaotic scenes after the incident.
The event was also attended by Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s wife, Ida.
The teargas canister is said to have been lobbed at the VIP podium after Kisii Governor James Ongwae finished his speech.
He had just invited Karua to give her speech.
Karua and Ida had visited Kisii to commission several projects before addressing a rally at Gusii stadium.
