NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul, 1 – Hours after the Commission for University Education (CUE) yet again revoked Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Johnso Sakaja’s degree, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed their request.
The poll body in a statement said that the only way to revoke its decision is through a court order.
IEBC’s Dispute Resolution Committee had given the green light for Sakaja to contest in the August 9, 2022 elections after throwing out a petition challenging his nomination.
The DRC said that it lacked the jurisdiction to determine the validity of Sakaja’s university degree.
“The DRC judiciously considered the said complainant and made a finding that the returning officer could not be faulted for clearing Sakaja based on the above degree certificate from Team University. Indeed, the returning officer’s main obligation, in ascertaining the educational qualifications, is to ensure that the provision of Regulation 47 of the Elections Regulations, 2022 are met,” said Chebukati who further said, “It is recalled that the said degree certificate was accompanied by a letter of recognition dated June 6, 2022, from your good office, which the communication fully relied on,”
Sakaja had presented a degree certificate and transcripts from the Team University in Uganda during his Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) clearance.
The UDA gubernatorial candidate said he holds a Bachelor of Science in Management degree conferred to him by Team University in Uganda.
Surprisingly, the Commission for University Education (CUE) withdrew the letter revoking the recognition of his degree certificate after Sakaja sued CUE chairperson Professor Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha for allegedly violating the orders of the court.
