NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 12- More than 50 journalists have suffered various forms of attacks from politicians in the recent past, the Media Council of Kenya has revealed.
The latest incident saw journalist Ian Bryon attacked in Migori after a senior politician complained over a story he had filed.
Bryon writes for the Nation Media Group.
He was assaulted by unknown people on July 10 while at a local shopping center in Migori.
He had written a story touching on Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed.
The MP is a member of the Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement and is also the Secretary-General of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance.
Media Council of Kenya Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo in a statement condemned the incident while calling for prompt investigations.
The incident was reported at Migori police station under OB No 28/10/7/2022.
“The Council has noted with concern the rising cases of assaults targeting journalists and media enterprises from politicians in the recent past,” he said.
He said such incidents have been in form of, “harassment and intimidation, both online and offline.”
Such incidents, he is warned are a threat to media freedom.
Journalists or any other aggrieved parties are asked to report their issues to the Media Complaints Commission.
“Attacks against journalists because of their work violates Article 33, 34, and 35 of the Constitution,” he said.
