NAIROBI,Kenya, Aug, 3 – The United States of America Embassy Domiciled in Nairobi has issued a security alert to its citizens cautioning them against traveling to Kisumu days to the general elections.
Kenya will hold its elections on August 9, Tuesday next week.
“Alerts of this nature to American citizens are common ahead of elections throughout the world, and the United States has no information to suggest the security situation in Kisumu, or in any other parts of Kenya, have been adversely affected by election preparations,” read a section of the security alert.
The embassy further said that Kisumu hosts a significant number of U.S. Embassy personnel and is a frequent travel destination for American citizens.
“The U.S. Department of State has no greater responsibility than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas and routinely issues Security Alerts surrounding elections, health conditions, and extreme weather, ensuring U.S. citizens have information that helps inform travel plans,”
Area leaders and residents have however expressed their displeasure at the statement saying that the county remains peaceful despite the ‘warnings from the US Embassy.
The alert came just a day after the new US ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman arrived in the country.
The country’s security apparatus have meanwhile urged Kenyans and foreigners equally that the country is secure ahead of the polls and even after the political contest.
