NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 9- Kenya Kwanza Presidential candidate William Ruto was among the first Kenyans to cast his vote, as polling stations opened at 6 am on Tuesday morning.

Ruto, who is the current Deputy President, cast his vote at his rural home in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu County.

The Deputy President was accompanied by his wife Rachael, and other family members.

The Deputy President said he was ready to accept the outcome.

“It is upon all of us to respect the wish of all Kenyans today,” he said. “I look forward to a victorious day, today.”

He urged Kenyans to cast their votes in a peaceful manner.

“I am optimistic that the people of Kenya will be able to vote for leaders with an agenda and plan for this country,” he said.

“This is a different election because Kenyans will be voting for issues and not tribes. I am happy we are at this point.”

He called on his supporters to come out in large numbers and express their wishes through the ballot.

“I urge Kenyans to participate in this important civic duty so that they can choose their leaders starting with the position of the MCA so that we can be able to take our country ahead in a democratic way,” the United Democratic Alliance leader said.

“I am confident and I trust in God, that this too will come home.”

He said Kenyans should be given a chance to make their decision without, “coercion or intimidations.”

Further, the Deputy President urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to conduct the polls in a fair and transparent manner.

He said all candidates should be treated fairly.

“We are shaping the future of this country and making sure Kenya is a great country,” he said.

“This will be a vote that will change the destiny of the country.”

Ruto is facing off the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga- who has received the backing of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This is the first time Ruto is on the ballot as Kenya’s presidential candidate.
