NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug, 11 – Kimilili legislator Didmus Barasa moved to the corridors of justice-seeking an anticipatory bail pending his arrest amid a shooting incident that saw a man shot dead.
Barasa is accused of shooting dead Brian Olunga, the bodyguard of Brian Khaemba.
Khaemba was a candidate seeking election for the Kimilili Mp seat.
He further accused the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) of not conducting investigations on the incident.
“No preliminary investigations have been undertaken but he has been branded as the perpetrator. Due to the negative publicity, he is wary of his safety and hence the need for the court to grant him bail pending arrest. He is fearful that if he is not granted bail, his security will be at risk,” he said.
Barasa in his application alleged that the deceased was part of a ‘hit squad’ targeting him and that he was shot by a stray bullet.
“According to a reliable source, the deceased was part of a hit squad that was deployed from Nairobi and was in fact killed by a stray bullet due to wrangles with his confidants. Mr Barasa has been branded a murderer without due process being followed thus prejudicing his right to fair trial…hence the need for the court to grant him bail pending arrest,”
The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji Wednesday directed Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to immediately facilitate the arrest of Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa after he allegedly shot dead Olunga.
Haji has further directed that the MP files his statement upon his arrest and a file availed to his office for appropriate action.
Mr. Barasa who is the incumbent MP, Kimilili Constituency, was reported to have shot and killed Brian Olunga, on 9th Aug. 2022 at Chebukwabi Polling Station. Mr. Olunga was a bodyguard to Mr. Brian Khaemba, who was Mr. Barasa’s opponent in the elections.
