HOMA BAY, Kenya, Aug, 12 – Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Gladys Wanga has been elected the new Homa Bay governor after she was declared the winner by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Wanna was competing against former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero who changed his political turf during this year’s election.
According to IEBC, Wanga garnered 244,059 votes against Kidero’s 152,182 votes.
“To our worthy competitors, we ask that now that the election is over we should keep it behind us. You had an agenda for Homa Bay, we had an agenda as well. Let’s come together, let’s work together and serve the people of Homa Bay,” said Wanga.
Kidero who was contesting on an independent ticket led in one constituency, Homa Bay Town , while Wanga led in seven out of eight constituencies in the county.
The political race to succeed outgoing governor Cyprian Awiti was seen as a close contest between Wanga and Kidero who ran aggressive campaigns while promoting their agenda for development in the county.
Wanga, the county’s outgoing Woman representative is the first female governor in the Nyanza region.
“To the people of Homa Bay, it doesn’t matter if you voted for us or not, let us move the county to the next level together,” she said.
ODM also secured the senatorial seat with Moses Kajwang successfully defending his seat after garnering 352,882 votes while Joyce Atieno Bensouda clinched the Woman Representative seat to replace Wanga after getting 284,348 votes.
