GARISSA, Kenya, Aug, 12 – After five years out in the cold, Pioneer Garissa governor Nathif Jama has been elected as the new Garissa governor.
Jama contested the county’s top seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket.
Outgoing governor Ali Korane sought to defend his seat on a Jubilee ticket.
Both candidates are part of the larger Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Alliance coalition.
According to the results announced by IEBC, Jama garnered 69,342 votes while Korane got 26,148 votes.
Meanwhile, current senator Abdul Haj retained his seat after securing a landslide victory.
Haji who ran on a Jubilee party ticket garnered 72,383 votes.
His closest competitor Mohamed Shale secured 19,279.
“It’s a great honour to be elected as Senator of Garissa. I thank you for showing confidence in me and giving me an opportunity to serve you. I thank the IEBC team in Garissa for the hard work they have done. They have shown us this time around that it is possible to have free elections in Garissa.” said Haji.
