NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug, 15 – Hours after being declared the country’s president-elect in the concluded elections, William Ruto had an engagement with journalists domiciled at the Bomas of Kenya where he gave his two cents on how members of the fourth estate covered him and his political campaign over the last several months.
Ruto has constantly accused and criticized the media for being what he termed as ’biased’ while covering him.
“When I criticize the media it is because I believe in the media and I want the media to do the right thing…..Balance you’re coverage,” he said.
Ruto made reference to the number of hours he received across all media outlets saying that his competitors received greater coverage despite constant protests.
Back in June, the Media Council of Kenya revealed that Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga received the highest media coverage.
Ruto at one point even threatened to keep off the presidential debate if the matter was not resolved. He however later attended the debate with Odinga not attending the political discourse.
“I intend to engage you as media outlets going forward because I believe in the freedom of the media and I believe the media has a role to play,”
“We want you to criticize us when we go wrong, criticize our competitors when they go wrong, balance you’re coverage, and let us have a free and fair media,”
