NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug, 15 – President-Elect William Ruto has revealed that he will either have a conversation with outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday Evening or tomorrow (Tuesday) if plans for a smooth transition will take place in the near future.
Ruto during engagement with journalists said that he was yet to speak to president Kenyatta though plans are already in motion.
“I haven’t talked to President Uhuru Kenyatta, our outgoing president, but I am sure there will be a conversation because now I am the president-elect and there has to be a transition and in that transition, I am sure there will be a discussion between the current president and myself. Either at the transition committee or at some point this evening or maybe tomorrow we will have a conversation,” he said.
United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential candidate William Ruto has been declared President-Elect, in the just concluded presidential elections.
The Elections were held on August 9, 2022.
The tight presidential race saw Ruto emerge victorious in the announcement made by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati.
Chebukati said that Ruto garnered 7,176,141 votes representing 50.49 per cent of the total votes cast nationwide.
“He achieved the minimum number of 39 counties at 25 per cent,” he said.
“In accordance with the constitution and the law, I Wafula Chebukati, Chairperson of the IEBC, hereby declare that Ruto William Samoei, has been duly elected as the president of the Republic of Kenya under the provisions of article 138 of the constitution in the presidential election held on August 9, 2022,”
Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga emerged second in the race garnering, 6,942,930 votes. This represents 48.85 per cent of the total votes cast.
Other candidates in the race included Roots Party’s George Wajackoyah who garnered 61,969 representing 0.44 per cent of the total votes cast. He came in third in the race.
Agano party’s David Mwaure Waihiga who came in fourth garnered 31,987 votes which represents 0.23 per cent of the total votes cast.
Preps To Swear-In New President Ongoing, Assumption Of The Office Of The President Committee
The assumption of the office of the president committee last Friday held its first meeting as it waited for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to announce the new president-elect.
Head of the public service Joseph Kinyua who also chairs the committee addressed the nation at the footsteps of Harambee House saying that plans are already underway to facilitate a smooth transition of power.
“The committee is established pursuant to the assumption of the office of the president act that is ACT 21, of 2012 and in furtherance of article 141 of our constitution. The committee’s core mandate is to facilitate a smooth transition from the current administration to the incoming administration,” he said.
Kinyua said that substantively the mandate of the committee will be triggered once the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) formally announces the results of the August 9 2022 presidential elections and declare a president-elect.
The committee will, in turn, facilitate handing over the process of the outgoing president to the president-elect, organize for the security of the president-elect and organize the necessary facilities and personnel for the president-elect.
Also, the committee will coordinate the briefings of the president-elect by relevant public officers, facilitate communication between the outgoing president ad president-elect and prepare the programme and organize the swearing-in ceremony.
“We will be making periodic briefings to the nation as the transition process kickoff,” he said.
The day the new president will be sworn into office will also be declared a public holiday.
