NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 6- A major operation to track down a gang that robbed a Nairobi-based businessman Sh1.5 million has been launched, with detectives exuding confidence in arresting them.
The incident occurred on Tuesday in the Utawala area of Nairobi County.
Shahidi News has established that the money was meant to pay construction workers at a site in Njiru area.
Police suspect the gang knew he had gone to withdraw the money.
The victim, while driving from Mihang’o in Utawala together with his uncle, told police that occupants of another car blocked his vehicle and ordered him to surrender the cash.
The cash had been stashed in envelopes.
“The three suspected robbers were armed with rifles at the time of the incident,” police sources said.
It was about 4 pm.
The attackers then took control of his car after bundling him onto the back seat and blindfolded him.
They left his uncle at the scene of the attack as they sped off with his car with the attacking one, a Nissan in pursuit.
They drove Utawala area where he was abandoned at the T-junction of Elshadai after being robbed of the money.
He later reported at Kayole police station, went to the site, and informed his workers of the sad drama.
The victim was not injured during the drama.
Police have warned members of the public against carrying large sums of money without an escort.
